openDesktop.org announces new event feature (english)
May 25, 2009
The openDesktop.org team is pleased to announce their new event feature today. Every user is allowed to register new events e.g. a Linux conference in London, a developer meeting in Berlin, a LUG meeting in New York or just a little barbecue in a backyard somewhere in Europe. All they need is an openDesktop.org account.
New participants can be invited to take part in events, friends get automatically informed via the friend newsfeed that some of their friends go to an event.
The date, a short description and a location is enough to start a new event. Locations get directly displayed via an OpenStreetMap applet provided by the free wiki world map on each event page. The event database is going to be part of the Social Desktop therefore events nearby a user can also be displayed via the Social Desktop Plasmoid for the KDE desktop.
Data can also be fetched using the Open Collaboration Services API. Furthermore an integration in Kontact/Kalendar and Evolution is being evaluated at the moment.

About openDestktop.org
openDesktop.org is one of the biggest open source network. Currently the portal contains more that 35 pages and nearly 130.000 registered users. The story of openDesktop.org began in 2001, when Frank Karlitschek (35) started KDE-Look.org as a community site for the K Desktop Environment (KDE). In 2003 he launched a portal for KDE applications and named it KDE-Apps.org. Upon the request of the GNOME community he launched GNOME-Look.org a few weeks later. More requests were received from free software projects and everytime another portal was launched. By 2006 there were over 20 portals - all sharing the same infrastructure and user database. In 2007 the content of all the sites were aggregated on a single portal called openDesktop.org. Since then users of all the portals have been meeting friends, creating groups, exchanging messages and micro-blogging on openDesktop.org. openDesktop.org is a free community portal. The hosting and other costs are covered by advertising and sponsorships. Although KDE and GNOME is prominent on the portal, openDesktop.org is independent and offers a home to all free software projects.
